What is the best laptop for kids? In today’s technological society, kids need technology almost as much as adults do. Whether it is a word processor for their homework or a phone to text their friends, it seems as if children just cannot be without their devices. This becomes even more important as children get older and start needing internet access for paper-writing and research. However, with the prices of school supplies continuing to rise, many parents feel pressure on their wallet when their child comes to them saying they need a laptop for school. This has prompted the market to create some less expensive laptops marketed specifically towards children. Even within this niche market, however, there is a great deal of variation, making it difficult to know which is truly the best laptop for kids.

HP Stream 11-r010nr 11.6-Inch - Kids Laptop Computer

cheap laptop for kids

  • One Year Subscription to MS Office 365 included
  • Windows 10
  • Lightweight

  • No major cons

The HP Stream 11-r010nr 11.6-Inch Notebook is a top quality product and an excellent value. It comes with an Intel Celeron N3050 1.6 GHz Processor and 2 GB SDRAM. It is preloaded with the Windows 10 operating system and a personal, one-year subscription to Microsoft Office 365, which is great for kids in school who will need to use things like Microsoft Word, Microsoft Powerpoint, etc.

The drive holds 32G and it offers great visuals, as it has a 1366 x 768 pixel LED-lit screen. The screen is 11.6 inches, which is large enough to facilitate word processing, but small enough to keep the laptop easy to carry. The overall weight only comes to 2.6 pounds, making it easy for even small children to carry it in their backpacks. It comes in four colors: cobalt blue, violet purple, horizon blue, and orchid magenta, which adds a nice novelty that kids love.

At $233.95, it is a reasonable price for market value, and much less expensive than other laptops. Therefore, we feel that this is a great value for the price.

This product has 5664 reviews on, and with this large of a sample size, you can have confidence in the overall impression. It has an overall rating of 4 out of 5 stars, with 52% of reviewers giving it a 5 star review and 29% of reviewers giving it less than a 4 star review. Generally, consumers agree that this laptop is a good value for the price. The major complaint is about the speed of the laptop. Because it comes loaded with multiple different programs, it can slow down the processing speed. However, many consumers report that when they deleted some of these programs, the processing speed improved. If you are looking for a solid, affordable laptop for your kid, this model is a great choice.

Acer Chromebook 15 CB5-571-C09S - 2nd best laptop for kids

acer chromebook review

  • 4 GB SDRAM
  • 9-hour battery life
  • Intel HD Graphics

  • Larger and Heavier Product

The Acer Chromebook 15 CBS-571-C095 is another very high quality product. It has an Intel Celeron Dual-Core 3205U 1.5 GHz Processor and 4 GB of SDRAM, which is twice that of the HD-Stream product.

It comes in both 16 GB and 32 GB capacities, it can open and edit MS Office files using a free embedded QuickOffice editor or Google docs, and it can download Microsoft Office Online. However, it cannot install standard MS Office software, which is a serious downside of this product for children who will need this for school assignments.

It has a 15.6 inch full HS IPS screen and Intel HD graphics, which are great for images and videos, and it weighs 4.85 pounds. While this is heavier than the HP-Stream model, it is still light enough for many children to easily carry in their backpacks.

It has a 9-hour battery life, which is a great help for kids who will be on their laptops for multiple hours per day. It does not offer a CD or a DVD drive, which may seem like a downside, but these features are really becoming obsolete quite quickly. Instead, it comes with a cloud-based drive and free Google Drive storage.

At $309.99, it is the most expensive product that we reviewed, but given the storage capacity, it is still a solid value. This product has 540 reviews on, and this sample size is large enough to give reliable results. It has an overall rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars, with 70% of reviewers giving it a 5 star review and 15% giving it less than a 4 star review. Most people are very happy with this product, but some complain that the screen will sometimes go black for no reason, and that the dimensions of the computer are larger than they were expecting. Overall, however, this is a solid choice for someone looking for a high quality laptop and willing to spend a little more money.

2go PC Convertible Classmate - 3rd best kids laptop

2go PC Convertible Classmate Review

  • Rotatable touch screen
  • 160 GB SATA Hard Drive
  • High Screen Resolution

  • Expensive

The 2po PC NL2PRO2GP Convertible Classmate laptop is a cutting edge product. It is most notable for its rotatable touch screen, which is likely to be a favorite for kids. It has a 160 GB SATA Hard Drive and comes installed with the Windows 7 Professional operating system.

The screen size is 10.1 inches, which is a little small, but it has a high screen resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. The weight is only 3.7 pounds, making it easy for many children to carry. At $280, it is a pretty expensive product, but many consumers believe the rotatable touch screen makes it worth the price.

Unfortunately, this product has no customer reviews on, which makes it impossible to get an overall impression of customer satisfaction. Therefore, we cannot assess the reliability of the product or give an overall recommendation of its effectiveness.

Lenovo ThinkPad 11 Business laptop - 4th best childrens laptop

Lenovo ThinkPad 11 Business laptop Review

  • 4 GB 1600 megahertz DDR3L memory
  • High Resolution Screen
  • Bluetooth and USB ports

  • Expensive

The Newest Lenovo ThinkPad 11 Business Laptop is designed with the businessman/woman in mind. It has an AMP APU A4-6210 Quad Core Processor and a 4GB 1600 megahertz DDR3L memory. The screen is 11.6 inches with an LED backlight anti-glare display and a 1366 x 768 HD resolution. It also comes with Bluetooth options, USB ports, and a built-in HD webcam and digital microphone.

It includes a Windows 10 Professional operating system and has a battery life of up to 6.6 hours. The overall weight of the laptop is only 3.3 pounds, making it lightweight and easy for children to carry, but this laptop, with all of its features, is clearly marketed more towards business than children. Also, at the steep price of $299.99, it seems like there are better, more child-focused models on the market.

This product only has six reviews on, and with a sample size that small, the overall impression is almost meaningless, as it can be easily skewed by just one person. Still, even with this insignificant sample size,

It has an overall rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars, with 66% of reviewers giving it a 5 star review and 34% of reviewers giving it less than a 4 star review. The main complaint is about wireless connectivity problems, which could cause a child much frustration. Therefore, while this is clearly a high quality product, it seems like there are better products on the market for children.

Atoah 7 Inch Mini Network - 5th best mini laptop

kids laptop computer

  • Inexpensive
  • 4 GB Storage
  • 2 USB ports and an HDMI port

  • None noted

The Atoah 7 Inch Mini Network VIA8880 Android 4.4.2 Jellybean Laptop Computer is made for children. It has 4 GB of storage and built in Wifi and Ethernet ports to access the Internet. It comes with 2 USB ports, a SD Card Slot, an HDMI port, and a built-in camera.

It is advertised as great for kids with the potential to access Internet sites and upload pictures. At only 1.5 pounds, it is extremely lightweight, making it a top children’s laptop. However, it does not mention any operating system or the capacity for Microsoft Office. Therefore, while this looks a great option for Internet research, it does not seem to support upper-level student functions.

At $109, it is an excellent value, and perhaps a great first laptop for a young child who does not yet need word processing capabilities. This product only has five reviews on, and with this small of a sample size, there is really no utility in evaluating the overall impression.

However, it does have an overall rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars. Four of the reviewers gave it a 5 star review and one reviewer gave it less than a 4 star review. If you are looking to introduce a child to Internet searching and are not looking to spend much money, this is a solid choice.

Things to Consider When Buying

When choosing a good laptop for your kid, there are certain things you need to know in order to make an educated choice. Try and keep the following things in mind while shopping:

  • Storage. How much storage will your child need? Will they be uploading and storing lots of pictures? Perhaps talk to your child and see what his or her expectations are. Storage is measured in GB, and the higher the GB, the more storage capability the laptop offers. However, GB storage capacity is positively correlated with price, so you do not necessarily want to buy the highest storage available. Make sure you have a good idea of what kind of storage capability you are looking for before you begin.
  • Resolution. Will your child be looking at lots of pictures and videos? If so, look at the quality of the screen resolution. The higher the pixel count, the better the resolution. Does your child want or need high definition? Just like with storage, high definition and high resolution are positively correlated with price, so be sure to have a benchmark of what you are looking for before you start.
  • Operating System. Does your child need Windows or Mac? Does it matter? Will they need to be able to access Microsoft Office for school projects? These are absolutely essential questions. Make sure you discuss them with your child, or perhaps your child’s teacher, to make sure you are buying him or her a product that will meet his or her academic needs.
  • Price. Obviously, some laptops are more expensive than others. Make sure you have a solid understanding of how much you are able to spend before you go shopping. This might also help you determine an appropriate storage capacity and resolution.

How to Choose the Best Kids Laptop

Choosing the best computer for kids is almost always a matter of personal choice. What is best for one kid is not necessarily best for another kid. The key is to determine your priorities and to spend your money on the features that matter most to you and your child. For instance, if high resolution and Microsoft Office are both essential, you might consider the HP Stream model. If, however, your child is only really concerned with having Internet access and you want to choose a budget-friendly option, the Atoah model may be best. As long as you focus on your priorities and keep the things to consider solidly in your mind, you will be able to find the best kid’s laptop computer for your child.
